Zoned Sports Academy Announces 2014 Scholarship Winners
Zoned Sports Academy has announced the winners of its 7th Annual $10,000 Baseball/Softball Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Awards. Scholarships are awarded to athletes in recognition of their athletic accomplishments, educational success and work within their communities. These scholarships are applicable to each recipient's first year of matriculation.
This year's winners are:
Mason Spichiger of North Hunterdon High School, Aidan McDermott of South Plainfield High School, Alyssa Vanderveer of Hillsboro High School, Matt Koskinen of Bridgewater High School, Mike Fair of Bridgewater High School and Jordyn Augustus of Parkland High School.
"These scholarships recognize athletes who have succeeded in far more than baseball and softball," said Duke Baxter of ZONED Sports Academy. "They recognize each of these athletes as well-rounded individuals, whose accomplishments reach well beyond the diamonds they play on. They are true champions in their schools, homes and communities. These scholarships provide a way for us at ZONED to recognize and give back to these young role models, as well as for those who will follow in their footsteps in years to come."
From the Zoned Sports staff we would like to say congratulations on your great accomplishments and good luck on their journey to play collegiate athletics.
14U Redhawks Head to Championship on Heals of 8 Man Win
On Sunday June 15th the Zoned 14U Black team defeated the Central Jersey Stampede with 8 players by the score of 4-2 to send them to the Championship game. The day started rough for the Redhawks when the game began and only 8 players were on the field and down 2-0 after the first inning. However, with their backs against the wall and a determination to win shorthanded, the Redhawks Black squad began to battle back one at bat at a time. Cole Chirichello, the games starting pitcher brought the Redhawks within one on a RBI groundball to the third basemen in inning number 1. The score would remain the same throughout the next 4 innings, when David Kurzrock had other ideas. With 2 outs and 2 men on Kurzrock smoke a single to the right side scoring 2 runs and giving the Redhawks a 3-2. The Black Squad would add 1 more run for insurance all but securing the 8 man victory. Chirichello was brilliant all day for the Redhakws going 7 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 earned runs and striking out 12. With that win the Redhawks Black squad has now secured themselves a championship date with Hillsborough Gold on Sunday morning at 10am. 16U and 17U Redhawks Begin Season on the Right Foot
Over the weekend both Zoned Redhawks 16U and 17U teams began their summer seasons with a tournament in Richmond County, Staten Island where the 16U squad went an impressive 3-0 while the 17U squad finished with a 1-0-2 record. For the 17U Redhawks in game one both pitchers came out firing. Red Hawks pitcher Brandon Pivlosky tossed a No-Hitter with 11 strike outs, but unfortunately the offense was unable to produce and then game ended in a 0-0 tie. In game two, the Red Hawks bats came alive as they scored 6 runs on 9 hits with the hot bat for the game being Cam Fuoti who had 3 hits. PJ Strahm got the start and Alec Fuoti came in relief, but for a second straight time the game ended in a 6-6 tie. In game three it was a different story; the Red Hawks again came out swinging with Scott Cooper leading the way with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Joe DiNizio got the win only giving up 2 hits, 1 run, and 6 strike outs. The 17U team looks to continue to improve on opening weekend when they return to action Saturday and Sunday when they compete in the Perfect Game 25 regional qualifier. Visit Zonedinc.com and click on Zoned Redhawks Elite for game times and directions. For the 16U, an unfortunate change in tournament rules kept them from competing in the playoffs, however they look to continue the winning ways this weekend when they travel to play in their Perfect Game 25 Regional. Good luck to both our 16U and 17U teams.
